WEEK ONE
Checking your bike
Making sure it is safe to ride and spot potential problems

Maintaining wheels and tyres
Information on wheels and tyres, including tyre care, Presta and Schraeder valves and how to mend a puncture

WEEK TWO
Maintaining your brakes
Info on how to adjust your brakes, replace your brake blocks or brake pads and replace your brake cable
 
Adjusting gears and maintaining chain
Knowing how to adjust your gears and look after your chain means you'll be able to keep your bike running smoothly

The course is led by experienced 'Dr Bike' Pim Jones as part of Wandsworth Cycling Campaign's Ting-Ting Tooting project funded by Transport for London's Community Cycling Fund.

DR. BIKE for students and staff of St George's University of London
Bring your bike for a safety check, minor repairs such as adjustments to brakes and gears, and advice on maintaining your bike.

Thursday 23 July 4.30 - 6pm
Ting-Ting Tooting stall for students and staff of St George's University of London Whether you're an experienced cycle commuter or can't yet ride at all, come along for advice on cycling - from what bike to buy to how to get free cycle training. Also free cycle route maps.

Sun 13 Sept - Falconbrook Ride
Join us on this easy ride (good preparation for the next week's Skyride) as we follow the route of the subterranean river from its source on Tooting Common to the Thames in Battersea. 11am start at the entrance to Tooting Bec Athletics Track on the Common. Return to Tooting Common by c2pm.
Free bike check and adjustments from 10.30am.

Sun 20 Sept - Mayor of London's Skyride
Departing at 10.30am from Tooting Broadway at Sainsbury's cycle parking in Salvador, the alley by McDonald's. Return from St James's Park at 3pm.
We're following the route of the imminent cycling superhighway to Clapham Common and onto the Mayor of London's Skyride (formerly London Freewheel) to join 50,000 other cyclists on a free traffic-free central London ride. Sun 4 Oct - Ride to Apple Day, Morden Hall Park

We'll follow the Wandle River to the National Trust's free Morden Hall Park for its apple day. Britain has a wonderful range of apples, why not come and learn about them. Free activities include apple tasting, apple pressing and apple printing. The Riverside Cafe will be providing samples of tasty treats made from apples and honey from the park.

Leave at 11.30am from Tooting Broadway at Sainsbury's cycle parking in Salvador, the alley by McDonald's. Return c2pm as agreed with group.The ride will be led at a gentle pace. Cyclists are most vulnerable when on the nearside of vehicles and the driver's view is limited. Merton's Road Safety Team and manufacturer Cemex are staging an event which show dangers cyclists and HGV drivers face on road.

Tooting Common via Clapham Common to Lambeth Palace Road

Join in this environmentally friendly and good-humoured way for families and individuals to travel to the Wave, On Saturday 5 December 2009, ahead of the crucial UN climate summit in Copenhagen, when tens of thousands of people from all walks of life will flow through the streets of London to demonstrate their support for a safe climate future for all.

The ride to The Wave will go at a gentle pace - children and those who haven't been on a bike for a while welcome!

RIDE DETAILS:
  1. Noon - optional bike check/adjustments by Dr Bike at ride start
  2. 12.30pm - DEPARTS from Tooting Bec Athletics Track on Tooting Graveney Common
  3. 12.40pm - Pick up riders (from Balham) on the north side of Tooting Bec Common
  4. 1pm - Clapham Common, picking up riders at the bandstand before taking the London Cycle Network route 3 to Walnut Tree Walk Primary School, Fitzalan Street, SE11 where bikes can be parked in the secure playground. It is then a short walk to
  5. 2pm - arrive Lambeth Palace Road to join in the Hands around Parliament at c3pm.
  6. 4.30pm - Return ride from Walnut Tree Walk Primary School, retracing original route
  7. 6pm - Arrive back at Tooting Bec Athletics Track

* No need to pre-register - just turn up on the day.

* This ride will not be to the start of The Wave in Grosvenor Square but to join the encircling of Parliament.

* Don't forget to wear Blue for the Wave!

* We'll be returning in the dark so please remember your lights and consider wearing reflective clothing. Wear layers and gloves against the cold (maybe a flask of coffee).

* Please ensure that your bike is in good mechanical order as we will not be able to stop to wait for repairs. There will be a Dr Bike from noon at the ride start point able to check your bike over and make minor adjustments.

* This is a led ride along a planned route to the Wave but it is for the riders to ensure that they ride responsibly and that their bikes are in good order. The organisers cannot be held responsible for accidents occurring on the public highway/cycle paths, or for theft of or damage to property during the ride or when parked.

* Experienced cyclists interested in helping marshal the ride (training can be provided) are asked to email mail@tingtingtooting.org.uk expressing their interest.
